A helicopter carrying six people crashed on Friday night near the California-Nevada border, killing all of those aboard, the authorities said.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that the Eurocopter EC130 helicopter crashed at around 10 p.m. local time near Nipton, Calif., an unincorporated community about 60 miles south of Las Vegas in eastern San Bernardino County.

It was unclear on Saturday afternoon from where the helicopter departed or where it was headed.

A helicopter of the same type took off from Palm Springs International Airport at 8:45 p.m. and was last seen near Barstow, Calif., at 9:49 p.m, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking service.

Officials at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department were made aware of the downed aircraft at 10:12 p.m. local time, Mara Rodriguez, a public information officer with the department, said in a statement, adding that the scene of the crash was determined to be east of Interstate 15, near Halloran Springs Road.

The National Transportation Safety Board and F.A.A. are investigating the crash, officials said. Representatives from the N.T.S.B. were expected to arrive at the site on Saturday.

The identities of the people who died will be released after they are identified and their family members are notified, officials said.
